Since the advances of technology, almost all of our professions require us to be on the computer, sitting on a chair. In fact, it’s normal to sit in an office all day. But our bodies are not meant (or made) to sit all day. And there are far too many damaging effects of sitting for too long. It’s no wonder that we have all sorts of aches and pains throughout the year. That’s why we do what we do, with a range of different standing desks to suit one’s particular needs. But how exactly is sitting “killing” you? Hang on and we’ll tell you. You might want to stand for this one.

 The research

Drive to work, sit on your office chair, drive back home and then sit on the couch to watch TV. That’s what the average man and woman’s daily routine looks like. And that’s an awful amount of sitting. Research claims that sitting and inactivity now takes as many lives as smoking and is far deadlier than obesity. Scary, huh?

According to an obesity researcher at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute, the average persons spends 9.3 hours a day sitting. And people who sit for six or more hours a day are 40% more likely to die within 15 years compared to someone who sits less than three hours a day, even if they exercise. And if we sit an average of 9.3 hours a day, that’s more time spent sitting than the time we spend sleeping!

Scientists say that anyone sitting more than 6 hours a day is at a heightened risk of developing health issues and sitting for that long, may be just as bad as smoking a pack of cigarettes a day – hence the phase, “Sitting is the new smoking”.

What can you do about it?

In addition to an office lifestyle, the average man and woman spend three hours watching television at home, after work. We all have our guilty pleasure TV shows, so if you enjoy your TV time, rather change up your office environment instead. It's much easier to stand and work, as opposed to standing and watching TV, right? (See further down for some office environment options.)

You can also take a lesson from Nilofer Merchant and change your sit-down meetings to walking meetings, something she says has changed her life, and forced her to get out the office. At a TED 2013 event, she said, “Sitting is so incredibly prevalent that we don’t even question how much we’re doing it. And because everyone else is doing it, it doesn’t even occur to us that it’s not okay."
